Hotel History

1912
Park Hyatt Hamburg is located in the historic Levantehaus which was built in 1911/1912 by local architects Franz Bach (architect, contractor) and Carl Bensel (architect, mainly for the facade design) as a “Kontorhaus”.  These “Kontohäuser” were designed and built from 1886 to about 1938 as special offices for trading companies.  These Hanseatic merchant buildings are distinguished by their design-related room flexibility.  Today’s arcades are named after the German Levante-Line, the first major tenant of the building.  “Towards the sunrise” is the meaning of “levanter” – hence, the sun is used as a trademark and adorns the entrance of the brick house.

1943-1995
During the Second World War 1943/1944, the historic building was destroyed by bombs but was rebuilt from 1948 to 1950, largely true to the original.  From 1946 to 1971, the Levantehaus was the headquarters of the company Deutsche Philips.  In addition, the ground floor of the office building continued to be used for the retail industry until 1995.

1995-1997
The excess supply of office space in Hamburg's Old Town and the oversized rooms made it difficult to find new tenants.  When the institution for statutory accident insurance and prevention in the administrative sector moved out, the historic building was renovated from 1995 to 1997 and rebuilt as an exclusive shopping arcade as well as the five-star hotel Park Hyatt Hamburg.  To this day, the Levantehaus stands for the constant change in the city.

1998
In April 1998, the five-star hotel was officially opened by the world famous hotel chain Hyatt Hotels & Resorts.  The Park Hyatt brand stands for discretion and intimacy in a prime location. Park Hyatt Hamburg has the largest guestrooms in Hamburg with at least 32 sq m.  Club Olympus Spa & Fitness with 1,000 sq m is also unique in the city centre.  Its unique service and the exclusive location on the first floor attracts international celebrities such as The Rolling Stones.

2009
Park Hyatt Hamburg now also offers catering services.  Hyatt Catering stands out with innovative concepts and unparalleled dishes.  Hyatt Catering Website

2010
Tashi Takang becomes general manager of Park Hyatt Hamburg.  Takang was born in Tibet and raised in Nepal as well as India.  He studied politics, science and economics in Delhi, before graduating from the renowned hotel school “Belvoirpark“ in Switzerland.  His career with Hyatt Hotels & Resorts began in 1996.

General Manager

Hometown/country: Tibet — in between Zürich, Switzerland

Did you know: My name is Tashi Tersing, which is Tibetan for “happiness and a long life”.

Career journey:  I’m happy for being part of the Hyatt family for 18 years already.  After Dubai, Belgrade, Warsaw and Istanbul, I have been working for Park Hyatt Hamburg since 2010.

Other interests: I love cooking for and with my children. To relax from the daily routine at the hotel, I go jogging along the Elb River or meditate before breakfast.

Your best travel memory: In June 2012 I got the opportunity to show my country of birth - Tibet - to my children.

Favourite restaurant: The Italian restaurant Case di Roma in St. Georg, not far away from the hotel.  I’m very often here with my family. The pasta is delicious and the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming.

A day in the life of Tashi Takang: No day is the same in the hotel, which is what makes working for a hotel so special.  Aside from briefings, meetings and daily functions, the personal contact with our guests and employees is very important to me.

Things I love about Park Hyatt Hamburg: Our hotel is located directly in the city of Hamburg.  But if you enter the hotel, you feel like you’ve left the bustle of the metropolis behind and you, finding an oasis of silence and relaxation.  Furthermore it’s our staff that makes the difference, turning our hotel into a very special place.

Concierge

Head Concierge Park Hyatt Hamburg

Telephone: +49 40 3332 1825

About me:
I have been working for Park Hyatt Hamburg for 15 years.  I am married and I have three sons.

Don’t miss when travelling to Hamburg:
Lots of good leg exercise.  Hamburg is very spacious, but it can be easily explored by foot, and many landmarks are only a few minutes from the hotel.  The town’s districts are very different and each one has interesting things to see or to explore: the city centre with its shopping area, HafenCity with its modern architecture, the Caro and Schanzen districts with their contemporary design and boutique stores, the sophisticated Harvestehude with the city park and, of course, Blankenese with the Treppenviertel.

Not-to-be-missed Hamburg specialities:
Nordish laubskaus, an old seaman’s dish, with a beer and a helbig kümmel (schnapps) after the meal.  Or another Hamburg speciality called pannfish, which consists of different kinds of fish prepared in a pan with mustard sauce.

Most delicious meal in town for EUR 15 or EUR 500:
Labskaus at the Old Commercial Room restaurant (EUR 15) or roasted duck in three courses at Landhaus Scherrer (EUR 500).

My favourite place in Hamburg:
Paddling though the Alster Lake waterways or enjoying the sunset at Elb Beach in Blankenese.

Definitely see when visiting Hamburg:
The best view of the city is from the viewing platform of St. Michael’s Church, Hamburg’s town landmark.

Fact about Park Hyatt Hamburg:
With 1,000 sq m (10,764 sq ft) of space, the hotel has the largest spa area in Hamburg’s city centre.

Recommendation for art lovers:
The Deichtorhallen’s House of Photography. Only a few minutes from the hotel, this art centre is well known in Europe for its contemporary art and photography.

My tip for night owls:
Visitors to Hamburg should not miss out on the city’s nightlife.  Start at Schanzenviertel, where there is a large bar and pub scene.  Then take a walk over to the legendary Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s red light district, and up to Elb Beach.  Finish the night with a fish roll at the famous fish market.

Extraordinary wish our Concierge team has made happen:
We arranged for the favourite singer of one of our regular guests to come to Hamburg during his concert tour and give a private concert for the guest’s wife on her fiftieth birthday.
